I sent two-track synth recordings on cassette to Phinney via the U.S. Postal Service - he loaded my sounds onto his 4-track cassette recorder, added his own synth sounds, and mixed it down on March 18, 1990. Phinney/Jackson/McGee Ditch

(originally released on cassette in 1990, C53)

Chris Phinney and Michael Jackson recorded many great tapes of experimental music under the name Cancerous Growth, including Beginning Of A New Age (1987), Desecration & Fornication (1988), Smokosphere (1988), Growth On The Beach (1988), Husk (1992), and at least eight others that I count in my collection. Jackson and Phinney were also members of Memphis, Tennessee's Southern Space Rock band Viktimized Karcass. So, I was quite happy to have an opportunity to record with this duo during my June 1990 visit to Memphis. We loaded up on the requisite amount of smokeable substances and took off for the outer limits of space and time on these two 26 minute free improvisations. Chris, Mike and I cranked up Phinney's arsenal of analog synthesizers (Moog Rogue, ARP Axxe, Moog Prodigy), applied a liberal dose of delay and reverb effects -- and created "Ditch" and "Escarpment". Abstract electronic sound paintings that build slowly over time, and then careen off in all kinds of different directions. Recorded live June 16, 1990 at Harsh Reality Studio. Originally released on my Electronic Cottage label. Photos by Tawnya Phinney.

"Ditch Part One" 26:33 -- 36.4 MB mp3 Side One of the tape: Ditch

"Ditch Part Two" 26:24 -- 36.2 MB mp3 Side Two of the tape: Escarpment

Margolis/McGee Peat

(originally released on cassette in 1990, C54)

Bwana Dog: Peat. One of my favorite tape releases in my catalogue, and a favorite of listeners over the years. Intense electroacoustic dark ambient urban soundscapes. Recorded August 11-12, 1990 at Sound Of Pig Studio in Brooklyn, New York. Al Margolis (If, Bwana): Cello, TRumpet, French Horn, Moog Rogue, Yamaha DX9, percussion, Vako Orchestron, Moog Sonic Six, FX, engineering, mix. Hal McGee (Dog As Master): Vako Orchestron, Cello, Moog Sonic Six, FX. The Orchestron is a rare electronic instrument that is similar to a mellotron except that it uses 12-inch vinyl records instead of magnetic tape. Originally released on my Electronic Cottage label. Reissued on my HalTapes label in 1995 (HT034) on cassette, and later on CDr. Photo by Debbie Goldberg.
